Story time! Reading stories aloud to young children — and then talking with them about what happened — is one of the most powerful literacy-building activities adults can do. Research consistently shows that interactive story times build the foundation for later reading success.
This is a fun hour where children hear a story and talk about what’s happening throughout the book so that children stay engaged and excited.

TVDSB Literacy Strategy 2024 - 2028
According to the Child Mind Institute, if a child reads one book a day with their parents or caregivers they will be exposed to 78,000 different words each year. From birth to kindergarten, this means they will have been exposed to 1.4 million more words than children who are not exposed to books (Zero to Three, 2024). Reading with and engaging infants, toddlers and young children, and exposing them to books and other forms of text/print directly impacts their early and ongoing literacy development and academic achievement. Adults who engage in conversations with their children using complex language also increase their children’s vocabulary and later literacy development.
